Bezhin Rosko
The scientific research of BEZHIN ROSKO concentrates on the biology of the model brown alga Ectocarpus (see below), investigating its life history, ecology and taxonomy. BEZHIN ROSKO also contributes to the research on genetics and development of Ectocarpus at the Station Biologique de Roscoff where Akira Peters used to work until December 2006. Our general approach is to study the living alga and due to nearly three decades of practice (see the curriculum vitae of Akira Peters and his scientific publications ) BEZHIN ROSKO has some expertise in the isolation and laboratory-scale cultivation of seaweeds. Ectocarpus is a genus of small brown algae which are comparatively well studied. None of the species is of commercial value but they have been used as laboratory models and sequencing of the entire genome of the type species, Ectocarpus siliculosus , at the French sequencing centre Genoscope has been finished in 2007. To the right a photography of an individual of Ectocarpus siliculosus which was collected in June 2004 in a tide-pool off Perharidy. It was growing on a green alga of the genus Ulva of which a piece is visible. The diameter of this Ectocarpus was about 8 cm. Another image of Ectocarpus showing a herbarium specimen from San Juan de Marcona, Peru please find on the top page of this site .
